Electronic Balance Magnet

Electronic balance is a type of high-accuracy mass metrology that is widely used in schools, laboratories, and factories due to its excellent accuracy, fast response speed, high reliability, and ease of operation.

Electronic Balance

An electronic balance is a highly accurate device used for mass measurement, widely applied in schools, laboratories, and factories due to its precision, fast response time, high reliability, and ease of operation. Its development has been significantly influenced by advancements in sensor, electronic, and microcomputer technologies.

Cast Alnico magnets are used in the electromagnetic system of electronic balances, where they generate controlled magnetic fields that interact with coils or force restoration mechanisms, ensuring precise and stable weight measurement.

Basic Principle

The operation of an electronic balance is based on the equilibrium between electromagnetic force and gravity. Its main components include a power supply, an electromagnetic force equilibrium transducer, a photoelectric sensor, a keyboard, a display, and a control circuit.

In a no-load state, the electromagnetic force equilibrium transducer remains balanced. When an object is placed on the balance, the position of the moving coil shifts, altering the light intensity detected by the photosensitive element. This change affects the output current, which is processed by the microprocessor. The microprocessor adjusts the current in the moving coil, restoring the transducer to its original position. Simultaneously, the microprocessor converts the current variation into a digital signal, quickly displaying the object's mass.

The electromagnetic force FFF generated by the moving coil is equal to the object's gravitational force, which can be expressed as:

where mmm is the mass of the object, and ggg is the acceleration due to gravity. The force equation also involves the magnetic induction BBB, the angle θ\thetaθ between the electrified conductor and the magnetic field, and the effective length LLL and current III of the moving coil. Notably, sin⁡θ=1\sin \theta = 1sinθ=1, simplifying the expression.

Sources of Error

Several factors can lead to errors in electronic balances:

Gravitational Acceleration Variations: Differences in local gravitational acceleration can affect measurements.

Temperature Changes: Temperature fluctuations, caused by ambient conditions or an overheated overcurrent element, can impact performance. Preheating the balance before use allows the magnet to reach thermal equilibrium, reducing temperature-related errors.

Electronic Balance Magnets and Assembly

To minimize temperature-induced errors, magnets with a low-temperature coefficient are preferred. Samarium cobalt magnets offer exceptional thermal stability and support a wide measurement range, but they are expensive. In most cases, cast Alnico magnets are the optimal choice for electronic balances due to their cost-effectiveness and reliable performance.
