Products Description

Custom AlNiCo magnet assemblies combine cast or sintered AlNiCo magnets with soft iron pole pieces, yokes and housings to create a defined magnetic circuit. The components are manufactured and fitted according to customer drawings to direct magnetic flux toward the required working area.

These assemblies are used in measuring instruments, sensors, pickups, holding fixtures and high-temperature equipment where magnetic field distribution and stability are important.

Magnetic Circuit Design and Magnetization

AlNiCo magnets have high remanence and relatively low coercivity, making magnetic circuit design important for maintaining the required magnetic performance. Soft iron pole pieces and yokes provide a return path for magnetic flux and help concentrate the field in the working gap.

The assembly design takes account of pole geometry, air gap dimensions and magnetization sequence. Where practical, magnets are magnetized after assembly. Alternatively, magnetized assemblies can be supplied with protective keepers when required by the magnetic circuit.

AlNiCo also offers good magnetic stability over a wide temperature range, making it suitable for applications where temperature changes must be considered during magnetic circuit design.

AlNiCo Magnet Assembly Configurations

We manufacture assemblies using cast or sintered AlNiCo magnets in bar, block, ring, horseshoe and custom shapes, combined with machined soft iron pole pieces, yokes or housings.

The working air gap is specified according to the required magnetic field and assembly drawing. Typical designs may use gaps ranging from a few tenths of a millimeter to 5 mm, depending on the application.

Cast AlNiCo is suitable for many larger or complex magnet shapes, while sintered AlNiCo can be considered for smaller components requiring close dimensional control.

Applications include:

  • Measuring instruments and magnetic sensors
  • Pickups and magnetic field assemblies
  • Holding and clamping fixtures

High-temperature equipment operating at 300°C or above, where supported by the selected grade and assembly design

Precision Machining and Assembly

The dimensions and alignment of the pole faces directly affect magnetic flux density in the working gap. Critical working surfaces are therefore ground and fitted to the tolerances specified in the customer drawing.

Polarity identification, magnetization sequence and protective packaging are determined by the assembly design. Where necessary, magnetic keepers or shorting bars are used to maintain a suitable magnetic circuit during handling and transportation.

Custom AlNiCo Magnet Assemblies – Request a Quote

As a manufacturer with our own production facilities, we produce custom AlNiCo magnet assemblies according to customer drawings and magnetic circuit requirements.

For a quotation, please provide:

Magnetic circuit drawing and required working gap

Operating and storage temperature range

Magnetization requirements, including whether the assembly should be supplied magnetized or unmagnetized

Required quantity and any critical dimensional or magnetic specifications

We will review the AlNiCo grade, soft iron component design, working-face tolerances and magnetization sequence before confirming the manufacturing requirements.

FAQ

Q: Why are soft iron pole pieces used in AlNiCo magnet assemblies?

A: Soft iron pole pieces help guide magnetic flux and shape the field within the working gap. They also form part of the magnetic circuit, which is especially important for AlNiCo magnets because of their relatively low coercivity.

Q: Should AlNiCo magnet assemblies be magnetized before or after assembly?

A: Magnetizing after assembly is often preferred when the design and available magnetizing equipment allow it. This helps establish the required magnetic state within the final magnetic circuit. Some assemblies may instead be supplied magnetized with suitable keepers, or unmagnetized for magnetization after installation.

Q: Can AlNiCo magnet assemblies operate at 300°C?

A: Certain AlNiCo grades can operate at 300°C or higher, provided the magnet geometry and magnetic circuit are suitable. The temperature limits of the housing, joining materials and other assembly components must also be considered.

Q: What information is needed to manufacture a custom AlNiCo magnet assembly?

A: Please provide a drawing showing the magnet, pole pieces, yoke and working gap, together with the required magnetic field, temperature range, dimensional tolerances and magnetization requirements. These details help determine the appropriate material grade and manufacturing process.
