AlNiCo Ring Magnet

For a long time, AlNiCo has been known for its excellent temperature stability and corrosion resistance. Because an AlNiCo Ring magnet is a circular magnet with a hole in the center, its dimensions are commonly specified as outer diameter (O.D.) x inner diameter (I.D.) x thickness (T). Speedometer magnets, loudspeaker magnets, and infrared guided missile magnets are examples of applications for these magnets.

Typical Applications of AlNiCo Ring Magnets

  • Position and speed sensors
  • Electric motors and generators
  • Audio equipment (speakers and pickups)
  • Magnetic holding and coupling systems
  • Aerospace and industrial control systems

Manufacturing Process

Because cast AlNiCo magnets are coarse-grained, hard, and brittle, they cannot be processed by standard machining operations, particularly drilling. Low precision holes are typically rough cast at the foundry stage, and magnets are cast close to their final size before being machined to the required tolerance. According to the detailed dimension, tolerance, and surface quality requirements, high precision holes and grain oriented magnet (columnar crystal growth and semi-columnar crystal growth) should use wire-cutting, grinding, or their combination.

AlNiCo vs rare-earth magnets

Rare earth magnets are more popular nowadays, but there are some application requirements where AlNiCo magnets are preferable. Neodymium nickel cobalt magnet have a lower brilliancy than rare-earth magnets. Rare-earth magnets are typically not used in high-temperature devices because temperatures above their Curie temperature can reduce their magnetic strength. AlNiCo magnets, on the other hand, can function effectively at high temperatures. They can keep their magnetic strength even when they are red hot from heat. Rare earth magnets are difficult to demagnetize, whereas AlNiCo magnets are easily demagnetized and remagnetized.

Design Considerations for Ring Magnets

When selecting an AlNiCo ring magnet, should consider:

  • Outer diameter (OD), inner diameter (ID), and thickness
  • Magnetization direction (axial or radial)
  • Operating temperature requirements
  • Magnetic strength vs stability trade-off

Q: In what situations is AlNiCo better than NdFeB?

A: AlNiCo is preferred in high-temperature environments or applications requiring long-term magnetic stability, where NdFeB magnets may lose magnetism.
