Ferrite Arc Magnets For Water Pump Motors

A typical water pump set for us is a ring of arc segments, Y30 or Y30BH class, shaped to the stator bore with the outer arc facing the air gap. On the orders we run, inner arc radii sit between roughly 8 and 60 millimeters, the arc angle per segment falls between 60 and 160 degrees depending on the pole count, and radial thickness runs from 3 to 10 millimeters, with the working air gap on the finished motor typically held between 0.3 and 1.0 millimeter. Two, four or six segments per pole pair are common, radially magnetized - two poles for small household pumps, multi-pole layouts for larger frames. What separates a good segment from a marginal one is invisible on a drawing: the arc must hold its chord, thickness and concentricity within tight limits after grinding, or the air gap the designer calculated exists only on paper.

The production route is standard sintered ferrite: wet pressing for orientation quality, sintering, then grinding on the faces that matter. Consistency matters more than peak numbers here. A segment with slightly low flux unbalances the rotor and shows up as noise and vibration in the finished pump, so we test magnetic moment on a sample basis from every firing batch rather than trusting dimensional inspection alone. When a customer's line rejects segments for flux drift, the cause is almost never the grade on the drawing; it's a batch that drifted and nobody caught the spread in time.

If you are comparing segment suppliers, three lines on the quotation tell you more than the unit price ever will: the magnetic moment window they commit to, the batch-to-batch spread they accept in the contract, and the grinding tolerance they hold on the inner arc. Ask each bidder how they sample magnetic moment per firing batch. A supplier who answers with a tested number and a reject rate is running the process you want; one who answers with the grade name from the drawing is selling you a print, not a part. We have quoted replacement orders that started exactly this way: a drifted batch, a noisy pump returned from the field, and a buyer reading test certificates after the damage was done.

On the assembly line, a few habits protect these segments. Keep the polarity marks from the supplier. Bond them into the housing with the adhesive the motor designer specified - epoxy adhesive bonds well to the unglazed ferrite surface - and note that ferrite can chip at the edges even though the material is mechanically rigid. Most pump housings retain the segments mechanically as well, so the adhesive mainly holds them in place until curing.
